Definitely can here the Gene in it. Norro was more of producer behind the scenes guy. He hung out with Rex Allen Jr for a while. He had a real minor hit covering Only You on Mercury.
This one was quite a shock! I had no idea there was an earlier version, and had no idea it was a Boudleaux Bryant composition. Ray Stevens is Prod/Arr/Cond, so it may have been done originally for Monument?
